Eminem Sees The World Through His Mother’s Eyes In “Headlights” Video: Watch

Eminem tries his best to explain his past, hateful behavior to his mother Debbie Mathers in MMLP2‘s pop ballad “Headlights”: the spats, the disagreements, “Cleaning Out My Closet” (and songs far uglier). Meanwhile, its new, Spike Leedirected video (out today, as a Mother’s Day tribute) actually views Eminem as how Debbie would see him. She leafs through a photo album featuring snapshots of a young Marshall Mathers, with hamsters and all – at least until the clip’s end, her only connection to her son.

“I really love the narrative for what we’ve come up together for ‘Headlights,’ because it’s a great, great story,” Lee said, in a video preview released May 9. “It’s heartfelt. There’s some pain in it, but that’s life. So that’s why we’re here – back in the hood, 8 Mile, Detroit, shooting where all this took place.” Plenty of Eminem’s videos bear good intentions, particularly from 2010’s Recovery onward, though none of those came close to touching his tenuous relationship with his mother.
