“Everything’s been sort of down to the wire,” Mariah Carey has said of her new album. While she wanted a surprise release for Me. I Am Mariah … The Elusive Chanteuse, her label has instead moved on from the delays and under-performing singles with a traditional announcement. Or, as Carey would say, “It’s only because I want people to experience the album as a body of work. I keep saying that, and yet everybody around me is like, ‘So what’s the single, and what are we putting up on iTunes?’”

Carey’s new song “Thirsty,” as premiered on Power 105.1 on May 13, is the sort of single that her label likely wanted. The pop diva plays it cool in a club-friendly R&B setting, her nonchalant verses skittering over a synth melody that sounds like the prelude to Jay Z and Kanye West‘s “Paris.” Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan also drops in for a surprise verse, as he isn’t listed in the album’s tracklist. His appearance is timely, though – as revealed last week, he’s in XXL‘s Freshman Class of 2014.

“Thirsty” sounds tailor-made for radio airplay, right now — but is it the sort of boost that Me. I Am Mariah needs? Hear an extended snippet after the jump, then weigh in at the comments below.
