Mariah Carey & Wale Debut “You Don’t Know What To Do” On ‘TODAY’: Watch

Mariah Carey debuted a new song, “You Don’t Know What to Do” featuring Wale, on May 16 at TODAY. She appeared as she did at this year’s BET Honors – in a slinky black dress, while draped over a baby grand piano. But the song isn’t the same sort of throwback to nightclub jazz. Instead, it delivers a sleek, contemporary update to late ’70s disco. It’s what Daft Punk (and Pharrell) did in last year’s song of the summer, “Get Lucky.”

Pay close attention to the lone roller-skater on the stage – he got the right idea.

Regardless of all that, Carey’s TODAY performance made for a good first impression of her new song. Her angelic voice sounds terrific here. And actually, the overall vibe seems more fitting than the modern-day club settings that she roams in “Thirsty” — another song that she debuted this week, with and without verses from Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan, from her new album Me. I Am Mariah … The Elusive Chanteuse.

The pop diva sounded carefree, even in between calculated flourishes of her one gloved hand. Watch the live debut of “You Don’t Know What to Do” up top.
