Lana Del Rey Unveils “Shades Of Cool”: Listen
Lana Del Rey‘s “Shades of Cool” (released today, May 26) can sound like a fairytale ending.
When strings pour in at the hook, she shifts from sounding haunted to innocent, if not ageless. Just as easily, she could be singing “Someday My Prince Will Come.” But it ends up being a cruel joke of sorts. “When he calls, he calls for me and not for you,” she coos at the bridge, revealing but not dwelling on how her fairytale ending’s come at someone else’s expense. It’s as she’s described her third album Ultraviolence (out June 13) as a whole, though while a world away from the brooding and spare “West Coast” – “It’s so wrong and exquisite.”
