Ed Sheeran‘s funky Song Of The Summer contender “Sing” was finally released in the UK this week, and it’s currently sitting at the top of the country’s iTunes chart. Just below the Pharrell-produced hit on the digital retailer’s singles roundup is Sam Smith‘s UK chart-topper (and breakthrough US hit) “Stay With Me.” Deciding to put the “friendly” in the term friendly competition, Sheeran paid tribute to Smith by performing “Stay With Me” this morning on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge.

“It is my favorite song of the last year,” Sheeran told host Annie Mac, while explaining why he chose to cover Smith’s ballad. “I think it’s an instant classic. It’s gonna be around for a long time. [Sam Smith] is gonna be around for a long time, as well.”
