La Roux Debuts New ‘Trouble In Paradise’ Song “Tropical Chancer”: Listen

La Roux‘s “Tropical Chancer,” the third song revealed from her new album Trouble in Paradise, kicks off with an funky electric guitar rhythm. And while taking that in, listeners immediately compared it to one of 2013’s songs of the summer: Daft Punk‘s “Get Lucky.” But when Elly Jackson starts singing wistfully of being wronged, the song blooms into something entirely different than expected – this sublime combination of disco melodies and calypso instrumentation.

Jackson says she was listening to disco throughout the making of Trouble in Paradise – songs like “Get Lucky” and classics featuring Nile Rodgers, but a few unexpected cuts as well. “‘Heartbeat’ by Taana Gardner, for instance, nothing else sounds like that, nothing else feels like that,” she said to Rolling Stone, adding, “It’s got all the sexiness of disco, but I wouldn’t say that it’s like classic disco that a lot of people think of when you say the word disco.”

The same could be said for “Tropical Chancer,” too. Hear the new song after the jump.
