John Legend‘s new “You and I (Nobody in the World)” video begins with a familiar scene. As he sits on his bed, waiting, supermodel (and Legend’s wife) Chrissy Teigan stares straight ahead as she tucks her hair behind her ears, as if in front of a mirror.

This scene cuts to others of women, including Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox, as they brush their teeth, try on clothes and wipe their makeup off, taking in their reflection. Some look dismayed by what they see, which is heartbreaking. Others look pleased, as if they can hear Legend sing his words of encouragement: “You were fine in my eyes, a half and hour ago.”

Watching Legend’s new video can feel like déjà vu, because of how other memorable pop videos come to mind. Like for “You and I,” clips for TLC‘s 1999 single “Unpretty,” Christina Aguilera‘s 2002 hit “Beautiful” and Beyonce‘s “Pretty Hurts” aimed to promote a positive body image and healthy attitude, while reminding of the dangers of society’s hyper-critical standards.

Given how we have become more aware of, yet are still prone to such standards, here’s to hoping that Legend’s message sticks. Watch his new “You and I (Nobody in the World)” video up top.
