Drake Joins PARTYNEXTDOOR On New Song “Recognize”: Listen

Last spring, Drake selected PARTYNEXTDOOR as the first signee of his OVO Sound imprint. The Toronto producer-singer released his debut, self-titled mixtape under this moniker a few months later. (He had been releasing R&B under his real name, Jahron Brathwaite, prior to signing.) Later that year, he appeared as an unlisted opener at Drake’s Would You Like a Tour?, warming up stadium crowds for billed opening acts Future and Miguel.

Naturally, then, Drake guests in PARTYNEXTDOOR’s “Recognize,” a new song that announces his sequel to last year’s music, simply titled PARTYNEXTDOOR 2 (out July 29). To be honest, though, “Recognize” doesn’t re-introduce the producer-singer as a singular artist, as much as it portrays OVO Sound as a state of being. “You got n—-s, and I got b—-s,” PARTYNEXTDOOR warbles from a distance. The whole affair unfolds to what feels like a sick fog, what sounds like Future meets former Drake affiliate The Weeknd. Plus, he goes on to lift the percussive flow of Soulja Boy‘s “We Made It” – as Drake did in his own “We Made It” remix from last year. All of this happens before Drake even enters the song.

Based on his new mixtape’s tracklist, though, PARTYNEXTDOOR will have other opportunities to distinguish himself from his label boss. Not only is Drake the only guest, but “Recognize” appears to be the only song with a featured artist. Hear “Recognize” and see the PARTYNEXTDOOR 2 tracklist below.
