FKA Twigs Sings About Her Life As A “Video Girl”: Listen To The Haunting Track

With the recent premiere of her dazzling single “Two Weeks,”  and the release of her highly-anticipated debut album LP1 just around the corner, British soulstress FKA Twigs — real name Tahliah Barnett — is everyone’s new up-and-coming artist to watch. While she might be considered a newcomer, FKA Twigs is actually a music-biz veteran, revealing that she was, in fact, a back-up dancer in her latest track “Video Girl.”

Featured in visuals for Kylie Minogue, Ed Sheeran, Taio Cruz, and, most notably, in Jessie J’s “Price Tag” and “Do It Like A Dude,” FKA Twigs addresses her past in this very raw and slightly heartbreaking new track. As synthy layers and Tahliah’s gentle vocals wind throughout song, it seems that the singer is not just ready for a new start as an artist, but she simply craves it.

“I wrote that very shortly after I stopped being a video girl,” FKA Twigs told Pitchfork. “When I got signed, I stopped dancing — I’d given up that part of my life. I would go out, and somebody would be like, ’Oh, I recognize you!’ I’d hope it was because they’d heard my music, but they’d say, ’Are you that girl from the Jessie J video?’ I’d always say ’no,’ and they’d be like, ’You’re lying!’ I’d say, ’No! It’s not me.’ They’d say, ’You look just like her.’ And I’d be like, ’I know. So many people say that! It’s weird!”
