Ariana Grande performed the title track off her #1 album, My Everything, during the September 5 Stand Up 2 Cancer telethon that was broadcast across all major networks. As she would later reveal, Grande sang that song of heartbreak in honor of her grandfather, who died of cancer this summer at age 90.

“Sobbed my eyes out as soon as I got back. idk how he was just here & now he’s not & I’m singing a song in his honor,” she noted on Twitter.

The studio version of “My Everything” features delicate harmonies over a piano melody. Grande’s Stand Up 2 Cancer performance was also backed by swelling strings, which added gravitas to her torn lyrics. (“I know you’re not far / But I still can’t handle all the distance / You’re traveling with my heart / I hope this is a temporary feeling”).

Miraculously, Grande kept her composure throughout her performance. Watch her sing “My Everything” for Stand Up 2 Cancer up top.
