In a recent interview, Sam Smith was quoted as saying he didn’t want to be an ambassador for the gay community. “I’m not trying to be a spokesperson,” he told Digital Spy. “It sounds awful of me, but I’m really just trying to live my life and write music about it.” The break-out star now tells an Australian website that the comment was taken out of context.

“Of course I want to be a spokesman for the gay community,” the 22-year-old clarified. “I want to be a spokesman for everyone. What I meant was I don’t want to limit to just one community, I want to reach everyone, gay people, lesbians, transsexuals, straight people, Catholics, anyone. I want my music to hit everyone.” Sam also talked about coming to terms with his sexuality from a young age and the acceptance he feels from fans.
