Lorde is keeping her head up, sparking her heart and heading into battle with her striding Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 soundtrack anthem, “Yellow Flicker Beat.”

After teasing the track for several weeks, the brooding singer-songstress returns with a defiant battle cry — the first taste of new music since last year’s Pure Heroine.

Kicking off with an ominous sustained hum, the alt-diva moves into a murky and minimal melody atop spooky chants and noises, not unlike anything from her debut. “The scars that mark my body, they’re silver and gold,” she slowly pronounces. And then, there’s a sudden explosion, as the chorus launches the songstress into a fiery synth-pop anthem. “I just try, keep up with the red, orange, yellow flicker beat sparking up my heart!” she cries out across the slick goth-pop synths.

It’s as poetic and thought-provoking as anything she’s ever done, armed with the kind of defiant stomp that would perfectly aid Katniss in battle. “I’m locking up everyone who ever laid a finger on me,” she warns.

Don’t mess with a Lorde scorned.
