The Elusive Chanteuse Show might have only just kicked off in Tokyo on October 4, but already, Mariah Carey‘s been plagued with vocal problems.

While the glamorous Me. I Am Mariah diva has delighted the Lambily with the show’s promising set list — including a cover of Billie Holiday‘s “Don’t Explain” — the songstress hasn’t entirely been able to sustain some of those higher notes that sealed her legacy as a legend in years past.

From TMZ: “It’s clear she couldn’t hit the high notes she’s famous for. It seemed like Mariah forgot the lyrics…however it’s possible her microphone gave out since the stand broke during her performance of ‘We Belong Together.'”

And, unfortunately, fan footage from the event seems to confirm the report.

At seen above in performances of “My All” and “Vision Of Love,” Carey’s voice cracks several times when attempting those big notes. And during “We Belong Together,” her butterfly-shaped microphone indeed breaks, causing her to have to fuss with the holder until finally resting it on the stand. It’s all a bit of an awkward mess, unfortunately — although she does seem to nail “Don’t Forget About Us.”

It’s no surprise that every singer’s voice changes over time — even the greatest of the greats are affected by time. Perhaps some of her classics can be modified to better suit her vocals today? Or, was she simply having an off night? Sound off in the comments below.
