Prince‘s performance on Saturday Night Live has been highly anticipated and tonight (November 1), the musician showed the audience just what makes him so legendary. This marked his third appearance on the show (which was hosted by Chris Rock), and the first since 2006.

He made history by entertaining the audience with a medley of four songs — “Clouds” (performed with UK singer-songwriter Lianne La Havas),  “Plectrumelectrum,” “Marz” and “Another Love.” The 8-minute long set was the first for the sketch show’s 40-year run. Rocking his signature afro and three-framed sunglasses, Prince and his band members rocked the crowd with a stadium-sized energy that was filled with electric guitar riffs, funky piano melodies and hard-hitting drums.

September 30 marked the release of not one, but two albums from Prince – his 33rd studio LP, ART OFFICIAL AGE, as well as the debut LP from his band 3rdEyeGirlPLECTRUMELECTRUM. Check out his SNL performance up top.
