Bella Thorne's "Call It Whatever" Video
Disney diva Bella Thorne takes it back to the '50s in her candy-colored "Call It Whatever" video.

Disney has an incredible track record at turning teen actresses into genuine pop stars — hello Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez — but their attempt to do the same for Shake It Up starlet Bella Thorne fell flat when debut single “Call It Whatever” came and went without denting the Billboard Hot 100 (or any other chart). It was disappointing but the 17-year-old hasn’t throw in the towel. In fact, she released her debut EP Jersey today (November 17) and there are some familiar names in the songwriting credits.

For starters, Charli XCX contributes a track called “Boyfriend Material”. And it has the “Boom Clap” hitmaker’s fingerprints all over it, from Bella’s spoken delivery (she even appears to be imitating the Brit’s accent at times) to the icy electro arrangement. The song doesn’t quite work — there’s more autotune on it than T-Pain‘s last album — but kudos for trying something different. Much more successful is Bebe Rexha‘s co-write “One More Night”. It’s a cute bubblegum-pop song with fluttery synths and a killer chorus. This is a much better fit for the teenager and should be used as the blueprint moving forward. Check out both songs after the jump.
