Marina And The Diamonds Gets Emotional On “Happy”: Listen To The ‘Froot’ Ballad
Every month leading up to her album’s release in April, Marina And The Diamonds is rummaging through her Froot basket and picking out a succulent offering for us to enjoy. And tomorrow (technically today, if you’re living in Australia or New Zealand!), she’s selected a tune called “Happy.”
Unlike the dance floor-friendly “Froot,” the album’s opening track is a gentle, soul-baring ballad that sees Marina emotionally singing across a lone piano melody, later on accompanied by brief flourishes of drums and background vocals. And while the record sounds quite devastating, the underlying message is one of hope: “I believe in possibility, I believe someone’s watching over me/And finally I have found a way to be happy,” she croons across the delicate chorus. Listen to “Happy” after the jump.
With nearly no production, the song seems to signal more of a return to the singer-songwriter days of yore (The Family Jewels) rather than the mighty pulsations of Electra Heart. Marina sounds truly in her element backed by just a simple melody — and yes, even happy.
