Last night (Monday, December 15), Mariah Carey kicked off the first of a string of six holiday concerts at New York City’s Beacon Theatre to celebrate the 20th anniversary of her iconic album Merry Christmas. (You know the one — it produced the last great yuletide classic, “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”) The eye-popping show, though a short one at about an hour and 15 minutes long, saw Mimi tear through festive tunes from 1994’s Merry Christmas as well as 2010’s Merry Christmas II You while joined on stage by her trusty backup vocalists (including mainstay Trey Lorenz), a full choir, a pack of singing and dancing children and even a couple trapeze artists.

During a small break from the holiday music, Carey began to belt out “Hero,” but a problem that plagued her from the very first number on the setlist finally came to a head: her mic pack popped out of the back of her dress.

Mariah was a great sport during the mini mishap, stopping the song midway by yelling, “Really? Stop! I’m sorry! Cut! Cut!” She then sang the words, “I’m sorry,” and assured the audience, “It’s not his fault,” once a member of the sound crew came on stage to re-affix the device to Carey’s outfit. The culprit: “It’s the sweat.”

Mimi camped it up by ad-libbing in the downtime and singing, “It’s a long road!”

Like an absolute pro, Mimi eventually picked up “Hero” where she left off, with her band following her lead, and had the entire audience singing every word with her before all was said and done.

It was one of the absolute highlights of the night — well, that and, of course, the big final number: “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”
