2014's Best Pop Singles
Idolator's editors select the 20 best pop jams that were released last year.

It was only a matter of time before the sought-after Jimmy Napes stepped into the pop spotlight as a performer. The British songwriter has penned such singles over the past year as Sam Smith‘s “Stay With Me” and “I’m Not The Only One,” Clean Bandit‘s “Rather Be,” Gorgon City‘s “Unmissable” and Mary J. Blige‘s “Right Now,” and now he’s offering up his own cut, “Give It Up,” off his forthcoming debut EP.

“Give It Up” was produced by Napes’ frequent collaborator Howard Lawrence, a fellow Grammy nominee who makes up one-half of duo Disclosure. (In fact, “Rather Be” and Disclosure’s “F For You” are in competition this year for the Best Dance Recording Grammy.) The song showcases the funkier, R&B side of the gents involved, rather than relying on a house groove, as one might expect.

Napes, whose real name is James Napier, will release his EP sometime this year via Method Records. What do you think of his first outing as a pop singer?
