Years & Years Win BBC Sound Of 2015 Poll
Each year since 2003, BBC Music puts together a list of the most promising UK acts in a poll among musical industry experts to determine the most likely breakout superstar of the year. The highly coveted honor, which has previously been awarded to acts like Sam Smith (2014), HAIM (2013) and Ellie Goulding (2010), has since become a fairly reliable indicator of superstars on the rise. The votes are officially in for this year’s poll, and on Friday morning, dance-pop troupe Years & Years were named #1 on the BBC Music Sound Of 2015 Poll.
Having just dropped the immediately infectious “King,” the trio has been making waves and steadily building momentum, from their gorgeous, reggae-tinged “Take Shelter” to “Desire.” In an interview with PopJustice, lead singer Olly Alexander playfully acknowledged that the win would not affect the quality of their music. “We’re going to try really hard not to be boring. ‘Not boring’ – we’re going to get it tattooed on ourselves. It will be the word boring with a line through it. F–K YOU BORING,” he said. Luckily for the boys, their music has only continued to be the very opposite of boring.
The boys are now signed to Interscope Records in the US, and will release their debut EP on February 3rd.
Along with Years & Years, James Bay, Stormzy, Raury and George the Poet rounded out the Poll’s Top 5 for the year.
