TLC's ‘FanMail’ Turns 15: Backtracking
Revisit the TLC album that predicted how the internet became embedded in our daily lives.

TLC will release its final album, to be funded entirely by Kickstarter, by the end of 2015.

Doing so is a bold move, like when the iconic girl group used action-film style morphing in its “Waterfalls” video or creating an album, FanMail, that ultimately predicted how the internet became embedded in our daily lives. Remaining members T-Boz and Chilli figure, though, that crowdfunding their new music will not only allow them to have creative control, but for fans to have a say as well.

“Working with Kickstarter and all of the wonderful things that they’ve done, and their excitement [about] wanting to work with us — you definitely don’t want to work with someone who’s not excited about your project because they’re not going to put their heart, sweat and soul into it like we’re going to do,” Chilli said to TIME, adding, “Doing that with them allows us to involve our fans a lot more than what we’ve done in the past. It’s not so new for us, but it’s newer for them, and newer for us to have them so involved.”

TLC has worked with Lady Gaga and legendary songwriter Diane Warren over the past few years leading up to this final release. Chilli now says to TIME that while TLC hopes to start anew, the group isn’t against including those collaborations — that is, if the fans want to hear them.

For now, though, TLC is offering rewards ranging from video dance tutorials to autographed lyrics and a movie date with each member. The group is asking for $150,000, and since its Kickstarter’s launch today (January 19), it has already raised over $10,000.
