'Neon Nights' Turns 10: Backtracking
A look back at Dannii Minogue's classic dance-pop album.

It’s strange to think that an entire generation only knows Dannii Minogue as a TV personality, thanks to her judging stints on Australia’s Got Talent, The X Factor UK, The X Factor Australia and Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model over the years. True, Kylie‘s sister gained prominence in the 1980s as a child star on Australia’s singing and dancing kids’ variety show Young Talent Time (and later appeared on the soap Home And Away), but from 1990 to 2006, Dannii existed largely as a pop star, with her biggest successes occurring in the UK (where she racked up eight Top 10 singles, with an additional five going Top 20) and Down Under.

Well, throw all that out the window, because Minogue, who hasn’t released a studio album since 2003’s Neon Nights, is getting back to pop — or at least dipping her toe in the pool to test things out.

Dannii announced that she’ll be performing along with the likes of Nick Jonas, Betty Who and Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters at Sydney’s Mardi Gras bash on March 7.

“I’m sure there’s some people who don’t know I’m a singer,” Minogue said in a new interview with News.com.au. “After sitting in the judging seat on X Factor this is a chance to show people this is what I’ve done for my whole life. There might be people who were there the last time I played Mardi Gras, but there might be people who’ll have never seen me perform. They might be going ‘What? She sings?’ so it’ll be interesting.”

The writeup goes on to say that Dannii has quietly been working on music for two years: “When I used to sing when [my son] Ethan was really little he’d go ‘Mum, stop’ so I just didn’t sing. He’s only heard my new stuff, he’s in the know with all that. There’s a duet I’ve written that is really badass funky that he loves.”

Minogue’s Mardi Gras gig is still over two weeks away. Until then, take a look at her performance of “All I Wanna Do” at the same event, back in 1998:
