Lady Gaga’s ‘Sound Of Music’ Medley At 2015 Academy Awards: Review Revue
Last night (February 22), Lady Gaga took the stage at the 2015 Academy Awards to sing a Sound Of Music medley as a tribute to Julie Andrews and for the 50th anniversary of the film. Sure acts like Common, John Legend and Rita Ora performed, but Mother Monster’s rendition was one of the biggest moments of the long, drawn-out ceremony! So much so, in fact, that she even received a standing ovation!
Here’s what we thought of the singer’s musical set: “To be honest, Gaga’s performance was the breathtaking highlight of an otherwise predictable Academy Awards ceremony. She tore through bits of songs from the 1965 film, as made famous by Julie Andrews, such as ‘The Sound Of Music,’ ‘My Favorite Things,’ ‘Edelweiss’ and “Climb Every Mountain’.”

:: Rolling Stone called it “gorgeous” while also stating this: “Both her Grammy and Oscars appearances were similarly subdued with only tinges of her signature theatricality.”
:: ET Online said the singer slayed it: “Apparently everyone forgot Lady Gaga is a really, really talented singer? Maybe it’s the wigs and the crazy outfits. Maybe it’s the meat dresses and the being carried in an egg and all that blood. Whatever it is, people seem to have forgotten that first and foremost Gaga is an insanely talented singer. But they remembered tonight.”
:: US Magazine also enjoyed the performance: “Gaga sparkled as she displayed her musical chops, belting tunes from the beloved film as she captivated the entire Dolby Theatre audience, including none other than Julie Andrews.”
:: Other critics, like Consequence of Sound, were even bolder with their review: “Taking the stage to sing songs from the Sound of Music is a daunting task for any artist. Add in the presence of Hollywood’s most elite, including Maria herself, Dame Julie Andrews, and Lady Gaga’s performance at tonight’s Academy Awards was arguably the most important gig of her career.”
:: Hollywood Life loved that it was all about the music: “Even though you may still think of her as the woman who brought you vomit art and high-fashion egg wear, Lady Gaga is in fact a seriously talented artist with a phenomenal voice. And she proved herself once again with her stunning Sound of Music tribute at the 2015 Oscars.”
:: While Nylon Magazine revealed their inner Little Monster: “While we know and love Gaga for her crazy costumes and avant-garde tendencies, the pairing of this pop star with a classic movie-musical somehow magically worked. We’ve long known that the 28-year-old had amazing vocal talent (remember her 2010 Grammy performance with Elton John?) but never imagined her using those stellar pipes to perform some seriously great musical theater tunes. When the songs you’re performing are most famously sung by someone as iconic as Julie Andrews, the stakes are pretty high and it’s easy to get it very wrong—sorry, Carrie Underwood. Nevertheless, donned in an ethereal, sylphlike gown, Gaga did the 50-year-old movie-musical justice, much to the delight of Andrews herself.”
:: PopSugar was rooting for the singer: “The Oscars weren’t exactly as exciting as we hoped they would be, but there was someone who did everything she could to shake things up: Lady Gaga. She may not have been the expected person to come in for a Julie Andrew tribute and blow the roof off the place — but oh, she did. With a flawless voice and commanding presence, Gaga ruled that stage and made us worship her like never before.”
:: Lastly, the Sydney Morning Herald gave a politically-correct statement: “Gaga’s usual club-friendly sound is a world away from Rodgers and Hammerstein, but the 28-year-old’s performance was roundly described as a triumph, with some commentators suggesting the pop princess could have a future on Broadway.”
