“My Heart Would Take You Back,” the lead single from Shayne Ward‘s upcoming Mike Stock-produced album Closer (out April 12), got its first radio play today on Ken Bruce‘s BBC Radio 2 show in the UK.

Stock, a onetime third of the British production trio Stock Aitken Waterman, has long harbored a love for Motown and the Philly Soul sound, so it’s no surprise to hear echoes of both in upbeat ballad “My Heart Would Take You Back.” In fact, it’s refreshing to find Ward’s soaring tenor atop music of this caliber, as opposed to some of the watered-down ballads and R&B tracks he was handed for previous album Obsession.

Based on the album snippets we’ve heard so far and, now, the full lead single, it’s becoming clear that Mike Stock and Shayne Ward are a musical partnership we all might be the better for listening to. And, who knows — Closer might just wind up being one of pop’s biggest surprises of 2015.
