Madonna's 'Rebel Heart': Album Review
Madonna's 13th LP arrived early, so we had plenty of time to evaluate the project's merits.

Madonna sat down for a long chat with Howard Stern today (March 11) and, after a slightly hesitant start, slowly opened up about her long and distinguished career. “I don’t focus on my accomplishments,” the Queen of Pop states early in the interview. “I focus on the things I haven’t done yet.”

In some ways, that remark sets the tone for a surprisingly down-to-earth conversation that covers her various insecurities, the raising and adoption of her children, celebrity friendships (she describes Michael Jackson as “eternally tortured”) and even that infamous 1994 appearance on Late Night With David Letterman.

“I was mad at him when I said the F-word a lot,” Madonna says of expletive-filled interview. “I was in a weird mood that day. I was dating Tupac Shakur at the time and the thing is he got me all riled up on life in general,” she continues. “So when I went on the show I was feeling very gangsta.”

Howard also brings up defining events about her childhood including losing her mother and her father remarrying. It’s quite heavy, particularly when she details being raped, but there are some lighter moments. The highlight? The 56-year-old cutting off the radio host’s cohort with: “Excuse me for interrupting.” The ensuing silence is everything.
