Recently SXSW has become known for bringing in some of the biggest names in the music business (it is causing a bit of controversy), but let’s not forget the festival was based on discovering new acts — which is just what happened last night (March 17).

This year, we headed down to cover the madness that is taking over the city of Austin! For our first night, we joined our friends over at SPIN to check out various showcases. After chowing down on a few tacos, we headed to the “This Is OZ” event at The Palm Door. The decision was completely on a whim, but we were all in for a treat!

GusGus, an electronic band who hails from Reykjavík, Iceland, were the stars of the night as they kept the audience in a musical trance. The act already has nine albums tucked under their belt, but we’re glad that we stumbled upon them sooner rather than later. GusGus’ vibe is a mix of an ethereal wonderment, maddening beats that will have your heart jumping and sexually lush vocals. Their engaging stage presence had the audience’s hands in the air for their entire set.

After GusGus’ performance, we headed to House Of Vans’ Mohawk venue where acts like Speedy Ortiz, Angel Olsen and Hudson Mohawke graced the various stages. The showcase that caught my eye was the Scottish producer’s wild and incredibly packed DJ set, where he played a string of trap-influenced tunes — from his own “Chimes” to Kanye West‘s “All Day.”
