Last night (April 24), Bruce Jenner appeared on ABC News’ 20/20 to speak about her transition into a woman for the first time. As her story unfolded on national television, celebrities ranging from Miley Cyrus to Lady Gaga and Sam Smith tweeted their support.

“We have the chance to write this moment in history together,” Gaga said. “Let’s empower people like Bruce all over the world by being loving & not mean.”

Jenner’s interview with host Diane Sawyer was both heartbreaking and empowering to watch. She says that when she was hailed as the world’s greatest athlete, after having sailed through the decathlon at the 1976 Olympics,  she was confused with living life as a man but having the “the soul of a woman.” She also insisted, though, on not being so self-serious during the interview: “We have to keep a sense of humor about this, okay?”

Jenner also said that Kim Kardashian was the most supportive of her children, in part because Kanye West encouraged her to embrace Jenner’s journey: “I can be married to the most beautiful woman in the world, and I am. I can have the most beautiful little daughter in the world, and I have that. But I’m nothing if I can’t be me, if I can’t be true to myself.”

Between that story and the outpouring of support online, celebrities have shown how to provide, as Ariana Grande called it, “a more loving, supportive, SAFE/non judgemental [sic] place.”
