Tonight, Brett Morgen’s highly-acclaimed Kurt Cobain documentary Montage Of Heck premieres at 9 p.m. on HBO. You really should watch it — the film is a fascinating, heartbreaking two-plus hours that scores with the artistic liberties that were taken (the animations alone done of Kurt’s old drawings are fantastic).

One thing you won’t see in the doc is a more interesting moment from the Nirvana timeline — the times the legendary trio spent in the company of RuPaul. Above, we gathered some pics from the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards, when Ru, Kurt, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, Courtney Love and even a one-year-old Frances Bean Cobain took the opportunity to pose together for the cameras.

Flip through the pics, then check out the point when Kurt and his bandmates sang “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” for the drag legend on camera.
