Last week Sam Smith revealed to fans that he suffered a “small” hemorrhage on his vocal cords that led to canceling a few tour dates. But today (May 7), the UK singer’s says his condition has gotten much worse.

Smith will now undergo suspension microlaryngoscopy surgery or in other words, have his vocal cords repaired. He shared the news with fans on social media, stating: “I am very upset to announce that I have been battling to get my vocal cords better the last 10 days but unfortunately they haven’t recovered and I am going to need surgery.”

Doctors have recommended the “Lay Me Down” singer to take six to eight weeks off, which has led to him canceling tour dates for all of May and June. This includes performances at Hangout Music Festival and Rock In Rio USA.
