Mother’s Day Playlist: 10 Songs By Pop Moms About Their Kids

Mother’s Day is upon us. It’s that time of the year when we thank our moms for giving us life and not throwing us out of the house when we made awful decisions as teenagers. But what about the kids? What about the products of motherhood that offer these wonderful women the title of Mom? Well, some of our favorite pop stars fully acknowledge the gifts that are their children and have crafted some beautiful odes to them over time.

In honor of these moms (and their kids), Idolator has picked 10 of our favorite songs that famous women of music have dedicated to their children. And hey — if anything, you can play these for your own moms and ask, “Okay, so where’s my anthem?”

Lauryn Hill – “To Zion”
L-Boogie blessed us with this gorgeous ode to her firstborn, as she detailed the whole story about Zion on her solo debut album The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill. From questioning if she was ready to be a mom in the face of her fame, to then realizing that her lease in life was to be the best parent she could be, Lauryn Hill gave us life over Carlos Santana’s guitar. It’s one of Ms. Hill’s most honest and heartfelt songs to date.

Beyoncé – “Blue”
Jay Z honored his daughter’s birth with his own track, “Glory,” but Beyoncé gave it some time before she dropped off her sweet serenade to Blue Ivy. On her eponymous fifth solo album, Bey brought us “Blue,” a melodic piano-heavy ode to her little mini-me. The kicker, though, is Blue Ivy chatting on the track, much like her baby cries on Jay’s song. If your heart doesn’t totally melt when you hear Blue’s voice, then chances are you don’t have one.

Madonna – “Little Star”
Madge got pretty introspective on her whole Ray Of Light album, but took it to the next level when she delivered “Little Star,” a precious ode to her daughter Lourdes. “Never forget who you are, Little Star,” Madonna coos over gentle ambient electro-beats. It was during that era of the pop queen’s first foray into ’90s electronica, so to have her get deep to that sound made it an all-around trippy experience. Lourdes better feel #blessed she was gifted that song from her mama.

Björk – “Mouth’s Cradle”
Björk may be the ambassador of abstract, but when dropped off a song about her child, it was pretty clear: “Mouth’s Cradle” still embodies our Icelandic beauty’s signature sound, but coupled with the harmonic hums and choir-style chants, the result is just a gorgeous symphony. The greatest part of this song is how Björk discusses the way her child is always there to support her. It’s something moms rarely delve into — that unconditional love from their kid.

Alicia Keys – “Speechless”
When Alicia Keys gave birth to her son Egypt, she just had to come through with a proper expression of her emotions. Sampling Kanye West’s “Devil In A New Dress” with some lyrical assists from Eve, Leeshy breaks down how the feeling of motherhood is simply the most wonderfully different emotion that she’s ever experienced. There are no real words to describe it, so A.Keys goes with being speechless. It’s as simple as that.
