Pop Perspective: Britney x Iggy's "Pretty Girls"
Each Idolator editor gives their thoughts on the ladies' latest single.

Call us crazy, but doesn’t it seem like, less than a week after its release, Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea’s superstar pair-up on sassy pop jam “Pretty Girls” ought to be riding high on the iTunes chart? With just one month to go until June — and given Iggy’s reign last summer with both “Fancy” and “Problem” — isn’t this song a surefire smash?

Well, maybe.

Given her overall music icon status, you could be forgiven for thinking Brit-Brit has an infallible track record on the charts. But the truth is, she’s been hit or miss when partnering up with other ladies of pop — and, really, there have only been two big pairings: 2003’s “Me Against The Music” with Madonna, which surprisingly only scraped to #35 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the remix of Rihanna’s “S&M” that she hopped on in 2011, which was ultimately a #1 single. (And, er, Britney also teamed up with her sister, Jamie Lynn, on Britney Jean track “Chillin’ With You,” but that album was such a disaster, we thankfully were spared a promotional release of that particular gem.)

And yes, Iggy ruled last year with the Charli XCX-featuring “Fancy” and “Black Widow,” which boasted a Rita Ora-sung chorus, but let’s not forget the lackluster performances of  follow-ups “Beg For It” (with ) and Jennifer Hudson duet “Trouble,” a tune that peaked at #67 on the Hot 100.

So here we are now with “Pretty Girls.” It started off strong upon its Monday release, climbing to #2 on iTunes where it stuck around for two days. But as the week is now winding down, Britney and Iggy’s hopeful entry into the annual Song Of The Summer game is barely hanging on at #10 on the digital retailer’s download chart.

The truth is, it’s still too early to determine the fate of “Pretty Girls.” After all, the song’s music video hasn’t premiered, and we’ve yet to see what Brit and I-G-G-Y have in store for their upcoming Billboard Music Awards performance of the single.

But for now, at least, Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth don’t appear to have anything to worry about with regards to their four-weeks-and-counting Hot 100 reign with “See You Again.”
