Last night (May 20) marked an important and bittersweet moment for late night television, as the final episode of Late Show With David Letterman aired. One of the biggest highlights (and the sole musical one) was Foo Fighters performing their 1997 hit, “Everlong.”

The performance has special meaning for Letterman, as back in 2000 the host requested that his favorite band (Foo Fighters) play the rock tune (also his favorite) upon returning to the show after open heart surgery. The band obliged to his request and canceled their tour to play “Everlong.”

Foo Fighters’ performance was interjected with a mix of vintage footage and images that displayed some of the most iconic and funniest moments in Letterman history! Along with the band’s appearance, Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jim Carrey, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, Peyton Manning and Barbara Walters read Letterman’s famous final top 10 list.

Watch the performance up top, and let us know in the comments your favorite musical memory from Letterman!
