The highlight of Pitch Perfect 2 — both the movie and soundtrack — comes when Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) power-ballads her way into her boyfriend’s heart with the 1984 classic “We Belong” by Pat Benatar. It’s such a great marriage of scene and song that it got us thinking about current artists who should consider covering 1980s music from movies — but not just any songs, child. We’re talking DEEP but delicious cuts unfairly overlooked by time.

While these 1980s soundtrack songs may be unexpected, their inevitable success as a modern cover most definitely isn’t!

Obscure 1980s Soundtrack Gem: “Top That” from Teen Witch (1989) Original Artist: Squint-and-It’s-Sara-Gilbert featuring Dangerously Funky Hottie Artist Who Should Cover It Now: After the relatively blah performance of “FourFiveSeconds,” Sir Paul McCartney and Rihanna could finally get that shared smash for which they’re both so thirsty. YouTube Comment That Sums It All Up: “oh wow…i know i was a kid at the time but how did i not realize how ridiculously stupid this is? if i could go back in time i would slap the shit out of my 8 year old self.”

Obscure 1980s Soundtrack Gem: “My Little School” from The Worst Witch (1986) Original Artist: Charlotte Rae featuring Pink And Purple Wig Artist Who Should Cover It Now: Pitbull could pelvic-thrust the shit out of “My Little School (Mi Escuela Pequeña) (Mr. 305 Remix).” YouTube Comment That Sums It All Up: “Katy Perry has not aged well.”

Obscure 1980s Soundtrack Gem: “Do You Dream About Me” from Mannequin (1987) Original Artist: Alisha featruing Hollywood Montrose *snap* Artist Who Should Cover It Now: There’s only one singer we can imagine nailing Alisha’s girlishly gleeful Hi-NRG squeal: Adam Levine. YouTube Comment That Sums It All Up: “I remember – 1995, school trip to Belgium…all I could do was dance around singing this tune…the straight boys all beat me up :/”

Obscure 1980s Soundtrack Gem: “Here I Am” from Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (1988) Original Artist: Elvira featuring Her Haunted Hills Artist Who Should Cover It Now: Nicki Minaj, who seems to have modeled her entire aesthetic on this video. YouTube Comment That Sums It All Up: “hahaha i forgot bout this movie , i saw it on vhs when i was a kid back in the 80s . when everyone was asleep i turned it on and wanked to her tits twirling , i musta been like 11”

Obscure 1980s Soundtrack Gem: “Cookie Time” from Troop Beverly Hills (1989) Original Artist: Shelley Long featuring The Wilderness Girls Artist Who Should Cover It Now: She’ll hate us forever for suggesting it, but the world needs a Jenny Lewis cover. Oh wait — Jenny must have earned her patch in mind-reading! YouTube Comment That Sums It All Up: “Lmaoooooo and those big loads ran up to the table after the skinny ones walked by…”
