Hear D'Angelo's stellar return after almost 15 years out of the spotlight.

D’Angelo‘s Black Messiah arrived in December, nearly 15 years after the release of his prior album, Voodoo. With over a decade of false starts and whispers about the new material, it had become one of those mythical follow-ups like Chinese Democracy or m b v that went from exciting prospect to running joke and back to exciting again. But it looks like D’Angelo might not make fans wait quite so long for his next batch of new material.

In his first interview since releasing the album, the soul singer says he’s working on “a companion piece” to Black Messiah and that he wants to release a lot of music. Speaking to Rolling Stone, he also revealed that the 2014 LP was originally meant to be much longer.

“There were so many songs that I wanted people to hear,” he told the magazine. “What I’m working on now is like a companion piece. I hope people receive it that way. It’s part of the same vision.”

That said, he characteristically didn’t give a concrete timeline.

“I want to do what Yahweh is leading me to do. Do I know fully what that is? No, I don’t,” he said. “But I do want to put a lot of music out there. I feel like, in a lot of respects, that I’m just getting started.”

D’Angelo and The Vanguard are currently on tour. Read the full interview over at Rolling Stone.
