The 'ARTPOP' diva' opened the first-ever European Games with the John Lennon classic.

Lady Gaga and Carly Rae Jepsen were on hand at the Songwriters Hall Of Fame induction ceremony Thursday night (June 18) to tribute Linda Perry and Cyndi Lauper, respectively. Perry and Lauper were inducted into the HOF along with Toby Keith, Robert Hunter & Jerry Garcia, Bobby Braddock and Willie Dixon. Gaga herself was also given the inaugural Contemporary Icon Award by Tony Bennett, but the main reason for Little Monsters to take notice was her cover of Perry’s ’90s smash with 4 Non Blondes, “What’s Up?”

Now, despite the fact that Perry has gone on to become a hugely successful pop songwriter, that one-hit-wonder often incites laughter or ironic appreciation these days. But watching Gaga perform it (which she has done live before) serves as a reminder of just how insane of a vocal display it really is. Not many singers have the power and range required of that oscillating melody, and this should give you a newfound appreciation of the song.

Perry later returned the favor, covering “Bad Romance.” To induct Cyndi Lauper, Carly Rae Jepsen was called in to perform the classic ballad “Time After Time” off Lauper’s 1983 debut.

Michael Bublé was also in attendance to perform “Moondance” with Van Morrison, who received the Johnny Mercer Award, and there were performances from Ne-Yo, Nate Ruess and more. Check out photos from the ceremony in the gallery up top.
