Janet Jackson kicks off her comeback with slinky slow jam “No Sleeep.” A 30-second snippet of the Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis-produced track surfaced online tonight (June 19) along with the gif-tastic artwork (both below) — and I’m pretty satisfied with both! “I’m loving what you’re doing to me and I don’t want to do without it,” the flawless 49-year-old coos over a hypnotic beat.
The thing I love most about the snippet is the fact that Damita Jo pays zero attention to what’s hot right now and simply picks up where she left off — by delivering a heady dose of bedroom-pop. It’s not an obvious radio hit, but it’s quintessentially Janet. And that’s a much braver statement than returning with a cookie-cutter club hit.
