Hit-Boy, Sage The Gemini & K Roosevelt’s “Stay Up”: Idolator Premiere
It’s impossible to talk about Hit-Boy without mentioning his production credits — we all know them by now — but he’s slowly but surely making a name for himself as a rapper. And the thing that carries over whether he’s behind the boards or behind the mic is his agility. Hit-Boy is constantly switching up his sounds, refusing to settle on a go-to trope. And that’s why we’re excited to premiere his first official single, “Stay Up.” It features his West Coast pals Sage The Gemini and K Roosevelt, and it couldn’t be more different from recent track “Go All Night.”
Over a snappy, fuzzy hybrid of hyphy and G-funk, Hit spits with the type of rolling confidence guys like Too $hort established, while Sage offers a chilled-out refrain and K swoops in for a robo-soul bridge, all making for a truly Cali affair.
“I wanted to make a West Coast song with influences from the Bay, L.A. and the I.E.,” Hit-Boy told us about the track. “K. Roosevelt and Sage the Gemini, with the help of Iamsu! putting the authentic Bay slap on the production, made it possible to achieve this.”
