New Order Return With “Restless”: Listen To Their Lead ‘Music Complete’ Single

New Order possess that rare quality perhaps only a handful of UK bands that sprung up in the post-punk 1980s can lay claim to: quite simply, they’re still making interesting music. (And, yes — the roots run deeper than the ’80s; but we’re just talking New Order here.) Granted, their upcoming LP Music Complete (out September 25) will only be the Manchester outfits’ 10th in 34 years. But given the departure of crucial bassist Peter Hook, “Restless,” New Order’s first single from the album, finds them sounding fresher than they have in ages.

A good reason for that could be what seems to be a return to the more electronic aesthetic that made Bernard Sumner & Co. one of the most cutting-edge dance acts of the ’80s and early ’90s. And a good reason for that is likely keyboardist Gillian Gilbert‘s falling back into the fold — Music Complete marks her first album with the band since 2001’s Get Ready.

No, “Restless” isn’t “Blue Monday” or “Bizarre Love Triangle” or “True Faith” or even “Regret.” But it does mark what we optimistically hope is the iceberg-tip of another creative chapter in the long history of one of the world’s greatest bands.
