Robin Thicke attempts to stage a comeback with “Back Together.” There are fleeting moments where he recalls the desperation of Paula, the album named after his ex-wife — like when he sings, “I keep driving past your door.” At least this time, though, he doesn’t sound like a hopeless sad sack. Produced by Max Martin and featuring Nicki Minaj, “Back Together” recasts Thicke as a confident ’80s pop-R&B icon, with the suggestive hook and his falsetto coasting over the slap-popping bass.
“Back Together” appears to be off his upcoming eighth album, which already features the throwback soul number “Morning Sun.” Listen below.
