Lady Gaga won’t just appear in American Horror Story — she will be leading the cast. The creators and cast talked Friday (August 8) at Television Critics Association (TCA) about what to expect of its fifth season Hotel. Co-creator Ryan Murphy revealed that Gaga plays Elizabeth, the owner of the titular Hotel Cortez.

“She is a very wealthy social doyenne who is consumed with art, fashion and people,” says Murphy, “and she has a nefarious plan that is revealed in the first episode that plays out over the season.”

Gaga wasn’t at the panel, so everyone else at TCA dished about Elizabeth on her behalf. Returning cast member Angela Bassett plays Ramona Royal and has a “strong and real relationship” with her. As hotel denizen Donavan, Matt Bomer is closely associated with her. And Finn Wittrock, who plays male model Tristan Duffy, “finds the biggest high in Lady Gaga[‘s character].”

(Elizabeth doesn’t get along with everyone who checks into Hotel Cortez, though. Naomi Campbell will play a fashion editor who “pays the ultimate price for her critiques,” according to TVLine.)

American Horror Story: Hotel premieres October 7 on FX, with the 13-episode season running into January. Revisit Lady Gaga’s AHS preview here.
