Talk about a blast from the past! ’90s R&B icons Adina Howard and SWV are both kicking off long-overdue comebacks with new music this week. Let’s start with the “Freak Like Me” diva because it’s been a little longer since we’ve heard from her. In fact, eight years have passed since the 40-year-old’s last LP (2007’s Private Show). Happily, she’s back on a major label and has a catchy new single called “Bad 4 Me.”

Adina’s knack for controversy — some of her greatest hits include “Chocolate (Cuties & Condoms),” “T-Shirt & Panties” and “Phone Sex” — is legendary, but the comeback queen’s latest is an unusually restrained dose of retro-R&B. It’s very Motown, which is also the main inspiration for SWV’s new single “Ain’t No Man.” (The ballad cleverly interpolates The Four Top’s 1973 classic “Ain’t No Woman (Like The One I’ve Got)”).

The girl group reformed in 2012 after more than a decade apart. Their comeback LP I Missed Us produced two minor R&B hits (“Co-Sign” and “Love Unconditionally”), but “Ain’t No Man” delivers the soul-reviving harmonies that made tracks like “I’m So Into You,” “Weak” and “Right Here” so unforgettable. All in all, Adina and SWV both rise to the occasion with their new material. Take a listen below.
