Pop Perspective: Mariah Carey's "Infinity"

Everything about this exchange is embarrassing. Larry King asked Jermaine Dupri if Taylor Swift was the next Mariah Carey in a recent interview (below) and the “We Belong Together” producer looked a little stumped. “I don’t think so,” he stumbled, before adding: “I think she’s Taylor Swift. She’s an incredible artist where she is and who she is.” He then awkwardly likened the 1989 chart-topper to a boxer, who jumped up a weight division by going pop.

To make things even worse, the veteran host then described Taylor as a “freak of nature” (he prefaced the description by saying he didn’t mean it in a demeaning way). Jermaine’s answer? “Yeah, but they love her and she’s smart too by the way.” Messy. While Tay is clearly at the top of her game right now, she’s got a long way to go before she’s in Mimi’s league. The legendary diva landed 18 number one hits before the era of streaming and YouTube views, her younger rival has four.
