Pentatonix To Drop First Album Of Original Material, Announce Lead Single “Can’t Sleep Love”

While Pentatonix’s offbeat, a cappella covers might not be to everyone’s taste, there’s no denying the vocal group’s growing popularity. They landed in the upper reaches of the Billboard 200 twice last year. Third EP PTX, Vol. III peaked at number five, while seasonal offering That’s Christmas To Me did even better — peaking at number two and selling more than one million copies. As such, expectations are high for their first album of original material.

The self-titled collection drops October 16 and will be preceded by lead single “Can’t Sleep Love” on September 4. It will be interesting to hear the direction of the quintet’s new music, but don’t expect it to stray too far from their winning formula. I asked the group if they would consider releasing tracks with an instrumental backing when I interviewed them in 2014 and they were strongly against it. “If it was a Pentatonix release, it would stay vocal – maybe with some stomps and claps,” they said. “But it would never be a Pentatonix-only single with just a band behind us. We would never do that by ourselves.”
