While Jimmy Fallon was over on NBC making rap safe for white grannies everywhere, Stephen Colbert got Kendrick Lamar to close out his second episode of The Late Show with an out-there medley of To Pimp A Butterfly songs.

Lamar, who was the final musical guest on The Colbert Report, channeled that gig’s free-form “Untitled” performance with his six-and-a-half-minute hip-hop jazz odyssey comprising “Wesley’s Theory,” “Momma,” “King Kunta” and “u” on Wednesday (September 9). The stop-starts, the switched-up flows, the manic shifts in tone — it not only illustrated how Lamar is simply operating on his own plane right now, but it demonstrated the stellar talent of his backing musicians, including pals Thundercat and Bilal.
