Lady Gaga‘s latest music video is not for a giddy, strobe light-ready pop-dance anthem, but rather the emotional ballad “Till It Happens To You,” which was written and recorded with veteran music scribe Diane Warren for Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering‘s documentary The Hunting Ground. The film focuses on rape on college campuses, and Gaga’s visual for the song does the same. Rightly so, the video starts with a warning: “The following contains graphic content that may be emotionally unsettling but reflects the reality of what is happening daily on college campuses.”

What we do end up seeing above is various young women going about their daily lives until they’re put in situations where they’re raped. Shame and, eventually, self-isolation envelops each of them, but they find solace in their respective networks of friends. Again, it’s powerful, unsettling stuff, given all the more poignancy by an especially strong vocal performance by Lady Gaga.

The Hunting Ground premiered this past January at the Sundance Film Festival. Gaga’s “Till It Happens To You” single was made available today.
