Bridget Barkan’s Synth-Filled Ballad “Danger Heart”: Idolator Song Premiere
If you caught Lady Gaga‘s Monster Ball Tour in the winter and early spring days of 2011, then you likely saw New York-based singer Bridget Barkan providing backup vocals for show opener act Scissor Sisters. A close friend of the band, Barkan was recruited by Del Marquis for his Slow Knights project after Scissor Sisters went on hiatus, and today Idolator is premiering her new single “Danger Heart,” which Bridget wrote with prolific popsmith Scott Hoffman (aka Babydaddy).
“I remember when we [Scissor Sisters] were on tour opening for Lady Gaga,” Barkan tells Idolator while explaining the origins of “Danger Heart,” which will be released on Friday (September 25). “I was watching her one night and telling Scott about my dreams for my music and he encouraged me to keep creating. When we got into the studio together, he taught me so much. Scott pulled up a track he had started and I felt melodies and lyrics pour out of me.”
She continues, “I was inspired by a story I had on my mind, of a dear friend and a creative collaborator of mine, Dusty Childers. He told me how hard it was growing up in the South as a young gay man. How his father was driving him in their pickup truck to the department store to buy button down shirts and khaki’s and told him, ‘You gotta just make it until your 18, then get out of here and never look back’. He helped him survive high school with his love and support.”
Pointing out the song’s universal appeal, Barkan also says that “Danger Heart” is not only a theme for her friend Dusty, but “for all people, from all walks of life, in every corner of the sky, whether gay, straight, black, white, old, young — loving and fighting with our danger hearts.”
