At this point it’s a foregone conclusion that the winner of The X Factor in the UK will capture the top spot on the British singles chart each December, once the series wraps and a hastily-recorded cover is immediately rushed out. After that, it’s anyone’s guess as to whether the victor will have what it takes to stick around in the pop game (Leona Lewis, Little Mix) or, more likely, get whisked away into the mists of obscurity (Steve Brookstein, Leon Jackson, Matt Cardle).

The jury’s still out on the most recent X Factor champ, Ben Haenow. But he at least scored a coup by landing Kelly Clarkson as a feature on “Second Hand Heart,” the upcoming first single (out October 9) from his debut album (November 13).

Ben and Kelly, of course, have a common thread in Simon Cowell, who was a  judge during American Idol‘s first season, which Clarkson won, as well as the 11th season of The X Factor, which Haenow won. Haenow is signed to Cowell’s Syco label, while Clarkson’s first album, 2003’s Thankful, was released through S, Syco’s previous incarnation.

Below is Ben’s cover of OneRepublic‘s 2013 single “Something I Need,” which topped the UK chart the week of Christmas last year.
