Demi Lovato had three rules established for her latest Vanity Fair shoot: “no makeup, no clothes, no retouching.” The end result isn’t at all like her recent, cheeky Complex editorial, where she channeled Katy Perry as she posed topless on a giant inflatable banana. The Vanity Fair photos, shot late at night in a hotel room by contributor Patrick Ecclesine, may be her most intimate yet.

In a video that shows the photos (above), Demi explains why she pitched this shoot to the magazine. “I never thought that I would have ever gotten to a place in my life where I feel confident doing that,” she says. “It’s empowering, and it shows other women that you can get to a place where you can overcome the obstacles of body image issues — and you can feel comfortable and confident in your skin.”

In his accompanying article, the photographer adds another interesting tidbit: This Vanity Fair shoot took place after Demi’s great-grandfather died. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past day, it’s that life is too short,” she told him.
