Selena Gomez To Be Honored At Billboard Women In Music Event

Selena Gomez will receive the Chart Topper award at Billboard‘s annual Women in Music event in December, where Lady Gaga will be honored as Woman Of The Year. “Selena Gomez’s streak of No. 1s has earned her special praise,” the announcement begins, at which point you might be thinking “What streak?”

Well, Revival debuted at No. 1 in October with 117,000 equivalent album units (with 85,000 in actual album sales). That was her second No. 1 album following 2013’s Stars Dance. Lead single “Good For You” never reached the top of the Hot 100, though it did hold the No. 1 spot on the Top 40 chart for three weeks. So, there’s your “streak.”

All of this is my roundabout way of saying Gomez seems like an odd choice for the award this year (Iggy Azalea got the honor last year), but I guess it was either her, Florence + The Machine or chart juggernaut Taylor Swift. Not shading Selena, it’s just always wise to approach Billboard‘s extracurricular activities with a hefty dose of skepticism, since there are likely ulterior motives beneath that facade of objective chart jurisprudence.

So, before the Selena stans go off, I’m going to clarify again that this is not Selena shade. It’s Billboard shade, so Billboard stans, have at it in the comments.
