Adele’s “Hello” Debuts At #1, Sells Jaw-Dropping 1.1 Million US Downloads In First Week
In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past week and a half, just FYI, Adele is back in such a big way that the rest of your favorite artists who were even thinking about releasing new material between now and December might want to just hold off until sometime next year.
Here’s a rundown of the accomplishments the beloved British singer’s lead 25 single “Hello” pulled off in its first week of release:
* Debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming just the 24th single ever to do so.
* Sold 1.11 million downloads in the US alone, setting an opening-week record previously held by Flo Rida‘s “Right Round” (636,000 in 2009).
* Streamed a whopping 61.6 million times in the US.
* Ended The Weeknd‘s six-week reign atop the Hot 100 with “The Hills.”
* Beat Justin Bieber‘s “Sorry,” which was released the same day and sold 277,000 downloads in its opening week, to #1.
* Became the fifth song with the word “hello” in the title to top the US chart, the last of which was Lionel Richie‘s “Hello,” in 1984.
* Debuted at #1 in Adele’s home country of the UK with 333,000 in combined sales.
* Also debuted at #1 in the following countries: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Slovakia and Switzerland.
* Became Adele’s fourth chart-topping single in the US, following “Rolling In The Deep,” “Someone Like You” and “Set Fire To The Rain.”
* Became Adele’s fifth Top 10 hit in the States. (The only one to not reach #1 was her 2012 James Bond theme, “Skyfall,” which peaked at #8.)
