Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos Comes Out As Gay: “I Just Wanted So Badly To Be Straight”

While chatting with Less Than Zero and American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis for the writer’s B.E.E. podcast on Monday (November 9), Michael Angelakos, frontman for Passion Pit, publicly came out as gay. Angelakos’ third album with Passion Pit, Kindred, was released in April.

“I’ve told very few people in my personal small circles because I don’t know how to talk about it, you know?’ the singer told Ellis while explaining why he opted to come out on air.  “When this was all happening recently, finally, I just decided it might be best to talk about it here. I don’t really know what happened, but it’s just one of those gut feelings. It’s the same gut feeling I had when I said, ‘OK, I kind of just need to talk to people about the fact that I am. I’m gay’.”

Complicating matters is the fact that Angelakos married his wife, Kristina Mucci, in 2013.

“I just wanted so badly to be straight, because I love her so much,” said Angelakos. “So I think that was one of the most painful things about when we decided to separate. She said, ‘I don’t want anyone to think that this is your fault, because you’re gay. It’s not your fault’. And she was so sweet about it.”

About Mucci, the singer added, “When I decided to really deal with it head on, which was, I don’t know, in June, she was the one who spearheaded it in a way. She said, ‘Whatever happens right now is whatever. You need to figure out what’s going on with your sexuality – you can’t hate yourself anymore’. For what it’s worth, she’s really been one of the most incredible people.”

Following his revelation yesterday, Angelakos seemed upbeat and tweeted the following from the official Passion Pit Twitter account:
